Cancer

While being obese certainly increases the risk of developing kidney, colon and oesophageal cancer, it is not proved but it is believed that reducing weight similarly reduces risk. Terry Slevin, of Cancer Council nutrition and physical activity committee, says it is a question of probabilities and the best bet is to get into the right weight range and stay there. Obesity is associated with being sedentary and he says it has been shown that 14 percent of colon cancer is linked to physical inactivity. By becoming active, men can reduce their risk of this cancer and possibly reduce their risk of prostate cancer too. He suggests they do more than the recommended 30 minutes of activity a day to bolster their protection against cancer.

Osteoarthritis

Even small amounts of weight loss can make a big difference to painful osteorthritis knees. Mona Marabani, medical director of Athritis Foundation says if you are 15 kilograms overweight and lose just five, the difference to your knees can be enourmous. Too much weight accelerates osteorthritis in all weight bearing joints, including the small joints of the spine. Backache and disc pain can be lightened by shedding weight. The degree of improvement depends on the individual and the extent of the damage. In mild cases the pain might disappear completely. In moderate cases, it might lessen.

Breathing

Losing weight makes lighter work of breathing. The director of the Woolcock Institute Of Medical Research, Norbert Berend, says this happens because the chest wall is lighter and there is less abdominal load for the lungs to labour against. It means you can exercise more and he says there is evidence that losing weight improves both asthma and the response to some asthma treatments. It cuts down sleep apnoea and snoring. When fat is reduced, throat tissue firms up and is less likely to collapse, as it does during snoring and apnoea. Weight loss can also reduce obesity hypoventilation syndrome in which people can't get rid of enough carbon dioxide and can't get enough oxygen in. This syndrome can lead to respiratory and heart failure.
