WEIGHT LOSS
By the time your a decade or two into adulthood, you know your body pretty
well and don't need to step on the scales to know when you've lost weight. You
can feel it. Losing just a few kilograms can give you an incredible lightness of
being. It can also substantially reduce your risk of developing a range of
debilitating diseases. A 5 to 10 per cent loss of weight can reduce your risk of developing
cardiovascular disease by 35 per cent. This includes heart attacks, strokes and
all the related metabolic factors such as high blood pressure lipids and blood
sugars. Even men who are not excessively overweight will benefit from a small
loss. And, once a loss is achieved, a whole lot of other health benefits will fall
into place too. But if everyone knows that losing weight feels so good and that
it is so obviously beneficial, why are we getting fatter? In Australia, about 67 per cent of adult men are now overweight or obese.
Despite a diet of public health messages about the dangers of being too heavy,
the past two decades have seen a 3 fold increase in obesity. "The
enviroment conspires against us," says Boyd Swinburn, professor of population
health at Deakin University. Its dificult to take the default choice in the
cafeteia and it's difficult not to drive to work. And once you're overweight and
try to lose weight, a number of mechanisms make it hard to do so. * If you've already got joint problems, you can't easily become physically
active. * If you lose weight too fast, your body can respond by blocking the
loss. * If you try hard and don't succeed, you may end up with a greater sense of
